Apistogramma macmasteri “Redneck” is a wonderful dwarf cichlid. They are best kept in pairs or trios, I’ve found a 10 gallon aquarium to be sufficient for a pair and a 15 gallon for a trio. This species is relatively peaceful as far as Apistogrammas go, but the female will become dominant over the male during brood care. Therefore, a plethora of hiding places are a necessity. Coconut shell halves, Apistogramma huts and even broken pots will do the trick. Dither fish such as ember tetras and pencilfish will also help ease any tension between the pair. They are best maintained at a temperature between 75-78 degrees and a pH of 6.0-6.8, and a TDS of 25-100.
